condition Osteoporosis
Overview
Osteoporosis means “porous bone.” In osteoporosis, the structure of the bone becomes weaker and less stable. The bones in the spine, hip, and wrist are usually affected. Women are more likely than men to be diagnosed with osteoporosis because it is common after menopause. Most people do not notice symptoms until a bone breaks. A scan of the bone can calculate the bone density to diagnosis osteoporosis. Most patients will need to take supplements of calcium and vitamin D to help strengthen their bones, but other medications may be needed based on the results of the bone density test.
