Irritable Bowel Disease is a chronic autoimmune condition affecting the GI tract. IBD encompasses two main conditions, Crohn’s disease, and Ulcerative colitis, which differ mainly based on the presentation and location of the inflammation. There are approximately 3 million patients diagnosed with IBD and most people are diagnosed in their 20’s or 30’s.

Symptoms may include persistent diarrhea or constipation, blood in the stool, weight loss, abdominal pain, and fatigue or tiredness. If left untreated, patients with IBD may experience flares of their symptoms which can lead to hospitalization and surgical intervention. Typically, both conditions are initially treated with oral medications such as corticosteroids, mesalamine agents, or oral immunosuppressants however many patients may require biologic injectables to keep their disease in remission and improve their quality of life.
